Guided Days
GUIDED DAYS ON THE MIDLANDS TROUT RESERVOIRS AND OTHER TROUT FISHERIES
‘Guided fishing’ with a coach providing advice and encouragement is often an integral part of carefully planned, personal tuition that helps to refine technique and create new skills.
But not everyone needs tuition!
Why hire a guide?
Experienced fly fishers know there is no substitute for experience. They know that if they visit a new water, especially if it is large like any of the Midlands reservoirs and they are on their own, that they will spend a lot of time discovering the where, why and how of catching trout there. Fishing with an experienced guide is a short cut to knowledge. And, it is surprising how quickly that knowledge can be handed over to the astute, experienced angler who asks the right questions.
It always amazes me that UK fly fishers, who would never fish in Ireland, Scotland or anywhere else in the world without a ghillie or guide, can come to fish the challenging Midlands trout reservoirs for the first time and assume they can happily go it alone. Of course, for some self-discovery is part of the joy of fishing, and good luck to them, but there are also some disappointed anglers on the boat jetties at the end of a ‘hard’ day who have wasted valuable time and their money!
A short cut to success
Essentially, there are two areas of demand for guided days. The first is the person whose time is limited, perhaps a business-man visiting the area who can spare half a day or an evening between commitments and wants to sample, for example, what Rutland or another reservoir has to offer. They may need tackle, clothing, and transport provided but what they really want is a relaxing time and the best chance of a fish or two with a few photos and successful flies as souvenirs. They also want to know if it worth coming back for a longer trip when life is less hectic! The service provided includes picking the reservoir that is fishing well………there is no point in going to Rutland if it is not fishing well when Eyebrook is ‘on song’.
A short cut to knowledge
The other sort of client demand is from someone who has made a considerable investment in a holiday or fishing trip and is fishing the reservoirs, or other local water, for the first time. What they want, and as quickly as possible, is to understand why, what and where are the best drifts, locations, methods, flies and techniques. Part guided tour, part demonstration and part up-to-date intelligence is what they want to get the best out of the rest of their stay. They will probably never use the guiding service again unless they want the same knowledge about another water.
Costs
Guiding is charged by the half day (4 hours) because this is all many clients require.
The cost is £100 for up to two persons including all equipment required but excluding permit and boat hire costs if appropriate. Various permit options are available and under 18 year olds can fish for free on Anglian Water reservoirs when accompanied by a season ticket holder like me.
Coarse fishing guiding is also available with prices on application. There is a wide range of possible options to meet client needs. But, be warned, I will not offer a service if I cannot guarantee to provide expert guidance in your area of interest!
Corporate Days
Ask for information on hospitality and fly fishing for your guests, whether it is a great treat for honoured guests or a team building day for staff trying out a new activity away from the office. Wonderful days, tailored to individual needs, can be organised.
